What is the first
thing that comes in our mind when we think about beauty pageants? It is the
tall, pretty and skinny girls competing with each other to win the title, to
win to be called as a ‘beauty queen’. Beauty queen is the term used for the
winner of beauty pageants. But are these pageants just about beauty? Read on to
know more about how beauty pageants aren’t just about beauty and the common
stereotypes associated with it.
1. Beauty Pageants aren’t just physical- Beauty pageant isn’t a cakewalk. It isn’t just about
glamour and beauty; it is about Beauty with Brain. The participant must be intelligent,
well-mannered, confident and determined, just as the Miss Universe’s and Miss
World’s motto suggests ‘Confidently Beautiful’ and ‘Beauty with a purpose’
respectively. Some organizations claim that they don’t judge on the basis of
physical appearances. Public speaking and presence of mind are the skills that
a contestant needs to master. There are many rounds in the competition where
beauty is not the criteria to be judged, like personality round, sports round,
talent round, etc. The winner is decided by the Q-A round where the finalists
need to come up with an answer on the spot.
2. Are they setting up wrong beauty standards? Well no. These kinds of pageants promote healthy
competition. The participant promotes being fit and being the best version of
herself. They promote self-discipline and hard work. As it is said, Confidence
is the most beautiful thing that one can possess. Everyone is beautiful but
not everyone is confident. Health and fitness aren’t criteria just for the
beauty pageants, it’s also for sports industry. Like every competition has a
certain set of rules; these also have height and weight requirements. They have
now become more inclusive.
3. Is it a road to the film industry? Participating in a pageant definitely opens a door
to a wide range of opportunities be it film career, modelling, philanthropic
work, entrepreneurship or politics.
Miss
Universe 1967 Sylvia Hitchcock was an environmentalist who developed recycling
projects and energy-saving products after her reign ended. Lauren Nelson, Miss
America 2007 has been raising awareness about Internet Safety. Alamjeet Kaur
Chauhan, Miss India 1978 has been a practicing lawyer in the Supreme Court of
India. Bhasha Mukherjee, Miss England 2019 is now working as a doctor to treat
COVID-19 patients. Beauty pageants surely opens a road to the entertainment
industry but not everyone chooses to be a model or an actress.
4. Beauty pageants don’t have a cause- It gives participants a bigger platform to
raise their voices on different agendas and it encourages charitable work. The
glass ceiling is still there for women in today’s society, so these pageants
serve as a stage for the young women to come up. They are empowered to
influence sections of the society.
The
Miss Universe pageant winners work to advocate humanitarian issues and bring
about a positive change. They also volunteer, participate in fundraising and in
various awareness programme.
The
Miss World pageant winners are said to be more of a role model and less of a
beauty queen. The Miss World organization has raised more than 250 million
pounds for disabled and underprivileged children till date.
The
Miss Earth pageant aims at promoting environmental awareness and concerns; and
is supported by the United Nations Environment Programme. The titleholders are
expected to work on projects related to global environmental challenges.
5. Beauty pageants have a negative psychological impact
on the contestants- There
is a huge debate on this topic that the participants might suffer from
inferiority/superiority complex. It is said that beauty pageants can lead to
depression and low self-esteem. Well, some contestants say that they were
motivated by meeting many ambitious women who shared the same interests. They
learnt to make new friends, build self-confidence and improve their public
speaking skills. They learnt to love and take more care of themselves. And
also, it serves as a great opportunity to learn new skills.
Lastly, beauty
pageants celebrate the essence of being a woman. They have also evolved to
promote diversity but still remains a heated debate topic. What is your take on
this?
