As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to grip us, it is certainly bringing
a change in our environment, a good change. There has been a significant
improvement in pollution levels: air quality, reduction of noise pollution and
a clean environment. Since the government implemented stay-at-home orders and
halted all the transportation and industrial work, the air pollution levels
have fallen down drastically. The skies are now beautifully blue and clear. Not
only air, even the water bodies got a chance to get cleaned up. Due to everyone
following social distancing and the closure of border by most of the countries,
the deadly virus has surely hit the tourism sector but not the environment. The
beaches and famous tourist places got cleaned up due to no generation of wastes
by the tourists. Due to little or no vehicles running on the roads, the noise
levels too have fallen down.
A decrease in greenhouse gas emissions has been noticed in China from
where this pandemic started spreading across the world. In
China alone, there has been a 25% decrease in carbon emissions over a period of
just four weeks. Carbon monoxide from cars reduced by 50% in New York City in
March 2020. Due to reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen
oxides (NOx) and particulate matter emissions and also due to ban on
air travel, air quality has improved significantly in all the major cities.
The South Asian River Dolphins
have been spotted back in the river Ganges at various spots due to lower water
pollution levels. It was considered as an endangered species for as long as 30
years. A critically endangered animal, Malabar Civet was spotted walking on the
road in Kozhikode (India). Puma in Santiago (Chile), wild turkeys in
California, Sika deer in Japan too were seen roaming freely on the streets. The
environment seems to be really healing and several wildlife species are said to
be returning back to its original habitat.
However, not everything is good
here. Due to halt in recycling activities, large volumes of wastes are being
generated every day. It has posed as a serious challenge for the waste
management industry in the present situation where use of disposable products
is promoted due to the fear of spread of the virus. Volumes of medical wastes
too have risen with around 8.98M reported active cases around the world. The
ecosystem and conservation zones are left unmonitored. Also, there is an
increase in home deliveries of food items and essentials which uses single-use
packaging.
The Coronavirus is now everyone’s
main worry than our environment. Hopefully the situation will improve and people
will continue to take care of the Mother Earth.
