Is there another life out there in the Universe?

The Universe is so big that we often think that we humans are the only life form in this entire Universe. Our Earth seems to be the only planet which can support life. We always wonder if there are more planets like Earth. Earlier we used to think that there are only 8 planets which belongs to our own solar system but now 4281 planets are known to exist in the entire Universe with many other planetary systems.

Based on studies reported in 2020, some parts of the planet Mercury is said to have been habitable in the past with primitive microorganisms as its life form. Venus was considered similar to Earth for supporting life in the early 20th century but later observations revealed that Venus has a very high temperature (462o C) which makes life on it impossible. Even the atmosphere of Venus is not suitable for habitability. So many researches are speculating that Earth like life on Mars is possible. Mars is said to have had water in the past and current studies are on to find the proof of existence of ancient life form in Mars.

Jupiter and Saturn are not likely to host life due to extreme temperature and pressure conditions. They don’t even have a solid surface and survival rates in these two planets is less than a second. However, the moons of Jupiter (Europa) and Saturn (Enceladus and Titan) has some of the conditions required for life. Europa is said to have oceans beneath its icy surface which is considered as the best target for the discovery of life. Enceladus too has subsurface oceans like Europa and it shows geothermal activity and has water vapour. The 2005 Cassini-Huygens probe detected hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon and oxygen while flying through one of its geysers. Titan is the only Moon in our solar system which is said to have a life supporting atmosphere.

Not only planets and moons, even asteroids and comets are speculated to have life. There are around 1022 heavenly bodies out there which is said to have Earth-like conditions. It might be interesting to think about other civilizations that might exist in other cosmic bodies simultaneously but there is no evidence about it till now. Our quests for finding extraterrestrial life has led to many new interesting discoveries. Until we discover proofs for life outside our planet, till then we might be the only example of life forms in the Universe.
